There are many reasons your child can benefit from an orthodontic screening by age 7
Although it’s never too late to be screened for orthodontic treatment, the American Association of Orthodontists and Dr. Hewitt recommend having your child screened by age 7 to discuss any concerns in jaw development, growth, and emerging teeth. In most instances, Dr. Hewitt recommends monitoring growth for treatment during the adolescent years, but on some occasions early treatment can help achieve results that may not be possible once the face and jaws have finished growing.
Early treatment can help to:
- guide the growth of the upper and lower jaws
- lower the risk of trauma to protruding teeth or traumatic bite relations
- correct crossbites
- correct harmful oral habits (i.e. thumb sucking, lip biting)
- improve appearance
- guide permanent teeth into a more favorable position
Early treatment often times prevents more serious problems from arising and may make treatment at a later age shorter and less complicated.
